Teaching Critical Thinking, Session One: Critical Thinking and Metacognition

Learn how to help your students become better critical thinkers. Help move them beyond simple knowledge to greater understanding of what you are teaching. This workshop demonstrates methods for teaching critical thinking skills and for planning instructional activities that encourage and require students to think critically. This workshop is a pre-requisite to Session Two.

GOAL AND OBJECTIVES

Goal

The goal of this workshop is to prepare instructors to incorporate the teaching of critical thinking skills into basic skills instruction to prepare students to successfully complete Adult Secondary Education (ASE) programs, i.e., GED and High School Diploma.

Objectives

By the end of Session One, participants will be able to:

  1. Define critical thinking and metacognition;
  2. Identify levels of critical thinking;
  3. Distinguish between didactic teaching and teaching for critical thinking;
  4. Plan classroom activities that require critical thinking;
  5. Recognize the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning and determine instruction that is appropriate for each; and
  6. Plan activities to assist students in developing metacognitive skills.
