Project-Based Learning, Session 1: Project Planning

What is project-based learning (PBL)? Session 1 provides definitions and the research basis of PBL and outlines the initial stages of planning projects for adult learners. This is the first of two 3-hour sessions on project-based learning (PBL) for adult education teachers. This session is a prerequisite for Session 2, which explores strategies for assessing learners’ progress.

Goal

The goal of this session is to introduce project-based learning (PBL) and provide an overview of the initial planning stages of PBL as well as the changing roles of teachers and learners in the implementation process.

Objectives

By the end of Session 1, participants will be able to

  • Describe characteristics of project-based learning and its benefits;
  • Identify the changing roles of the teacher and learners; and
  • Outline a plan for implementing project-based learning.
