Managing the ESL Multilevel Class

How do you meet the needs of ESL students in a class with skill levels ranging from beginning to intermediate to advanced? This workshop presents strategies for planning lessons for learners of widely varying language skills.

GOAL AND OBJECTIVES

Goal

The goal of this workshop is to help participants develop skills in managing the ESL multilevel class.

Objectives

Upon completion of this module participants will be able to:

  1. Identify characteristics of a multi-level class which distinguish it from a single-level class.
  2. Identify the six stages of a lesson and match them with appropriate grouping strategies.
  3. Identify and practice whole group activities
  4. Identify and practice activities for like-ability groups and cross-ability groups.
  5. Revise a lesson for a multilevel class.
  6. Identify resources for managing and teaching a multilevel class.
  7. Problem-solve solutions to the challenges presented by multilevel classes.
