Managing the ESL Multilevel Class, Session 1, Planning a Multilevel Lesson

How do you meet the needs of ESL students in a class with skill levels ranging from beginning to intermediate to advanced? This workshop develops teachers' skills in planning lessons for learners of widely varying language skills.

Goal

The goal of this session is to develop teachers’ knowledge and skills in planning a multilevel lesson for adult English language learners.

Objectives

By the end of Session 1, participants will be able to

• Identify characteristics of multilevel class that distinguish it from a single-level class;
• Practice writing level objectives and evaluation strategies for a multilevel class;
• Identify the purposes of whole-group activities;
• Design whole-group activities;
• Design activities for like-ability groups; and
• Use resources to design a multilevel lesson.
