Mentoring: The Administrator’s Role

What Administrators Need to Know and Do to Build a Successful Mentoring Program for Adult Education Instructors

This three-hour session presents a rationale for establishing an instructor mentoring program in adult education as well as the program supports needed to make it successful. It is intended as a companion piece to the two-session module, Mentoring Adult Education Instructors, that provides a step-by-step process for training mentors and those being mentored.

GOAL AND OBJECTIVES

Goal

The goals of this workshop are to provide an overview of the administrative requirements for establishing a successful mentoring program for adult education instructors and to help administrators decide if such a program is right for their agencies.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Determine the need for establishing a mentoring program at their agencies;
  2. Discuss pros and cons of establishing a mentoring program;
  3. Distinguish between the concepts of mentoring and peer coaching;
  4. Identify seven principles of a quality mentoring program; and
  5. Determine next steps regarding the establishment of a mentoring program.
