Organizing and Managing ABE Instruction, Session 1. Identifying Learners’ Skills

This workshop provides an overview of evidence-based practice, including a model for instruction that includes administering a series of assessments, analyzing the assessment results, and providing a detailed academic prescription for improving academic gains for ABE learners. This workshop has several examples of free reading assessments to administer to ABE learners, including the Word Recognition Test (WRT) and the Word Meaning Test (WMT); however, this module does not contain extensive training on reading assessments and/or instructional strategies needed to teach adult literacy.

GOAL AND OBJECTIVES

Goal

The primary goal of Session 1 is to provide a model for identifying learners’ skills and areas for improvement in literacy, numeracy, and writing based on a series of evidence-based and informal assessments. This session examines how to organize an individualized academic prescription for learners based on the results of their assessments.

Objectives

By the end of Session 1, participants will be able to :

1. Describe multiple alternative assessments for ABE learners;
2. Administer all four formal and informal assessments: the Word Reading Test (WRT), the Word Meaning Test (WMT), the ABE Numeracy Assessment Test, and the ABE Writing Sample and Rubric; and
3. Use a Student Assessment and Goals (SAG) Profile to document multiple assessment results and detail a specific academic prescription for ABE learners.
