Evidence Based Writing Instruction for ESL, Session 1 & 2



The goal of this module is to support participants in learning about, identifying, and implementing research-based practices and strategies in the teaching and learning of writing.


By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to

  • Identify the key components of the writing process, including literature that discusses the writing process.
  • Identify research-based instructional strategies for supporting ABE, ASE, and ESL students writing development.
  • Apply a rubric to their studentsí writing to identify areas of strength and areas that need attention.
  • Complete a lesson plan that includes instruction that will help address studentsí areas of need as identified in the rubric.
  • Describe ESL instructional strategies for teaching prewriting, paragraph writing and postwriting to ESL students.
  • Develop an instructional plan for classroom implementation of student writing practice.
