Registration: Eligible agencies are those that received WIA Title II or adult education state apportionment funding from the CDE Adult Education Office. Nominees must indicate their preference for either Institute dates: October 28th & 29th (Cohort one) or October 29th and 30th (Cohort two). Complete and submit the nomination form(s). Be sure that it is received in the CALPRO office no later than Monday, September 28th 2009.

Nominees will have the choice of attending a two-day Institute on either October 28th & 29th (Cohort one) OR on October 29th and 30th (Cohort two). Both cohorts will have one training day which will focus on the College Transition Tool Kit produced by the NCTN. For cohort one the training will take place on Wednesday, October 28th, and for cohort two the training will take place on Friday, October 30th. Both cohorts will be together for the summit meeting on Thursday, October 29th.

The College Transition Toolkit provides information and strategies in a number of key areas
• Designing a college transition program model
• Strategies for developing partnerships and collaborations with postsecondary education institutions
• Factors to consider in your recruitment strategy as well as tips for attracting eligible college-ready
• Factors to consider in establishing student eligibility criteria and tools that you can use for intake,
ongoing, and final assessments
• Effective counseling practices that support adult learners’ transitions to postsecondary education
and training
• The reading, writing, math, computer, college readiness, and study skills that adult learners need to successfully transition to postsecondary education

The summit meeting taking place on Thursday, October 29th will include presentations from policy makers, researchers and practitioners from across the state and nation. Participants from both cohorts will engage in regional networking and action planning during the summit meeting. Assistant Secretary Brenda Dann-Messier of the U.S. Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education and executive leadership from CDE and the California Community College system will be addressing the meeting.

The California Department of Education and California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) are pleased to offer California adult educators the opportunity to participate in the California College Transition Institute and Summit Meeting. At this professional development event California’s adult education administrators and policy leaders will learn about models and methods for developing college pathway programs and forming partnerships and collaborations to enhance transitions for California’s adult students from basic education to college. CALPRO is partnering with the National College Transition Network (NCTN) to offer two, two-day institutes. CALPRO will accept 30 applications per institute from administrators and agency based leaders who are nominated by an agency to attend.
