English as a Second Language Program

The Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education (BPACE) English as a Second Language Program places an emphasis on learner goal setting, and encourages staff to make clear to learners where they are in the process of achieving their goals. The program uses a Student Progression Flow Chart that helps students keep track of their progress. Instructors monitor students’ evolving needs by frequently conducting learner needs assessments and staff help students identify where to turn for assistance. The structured assessment process uses multiple measures and helps place students in appropriate classes. The curriculum is designed to accommodate diverse learning styles, and classroom materials incorporate SCANS competencies. Students engage in projects and other extracurricular activities that occur outside of the classroom. Learners receive certificates of achievement and completion, and students are offered the opportunity to transition from ESL into Career Technical Education. The program, which encourages professional development, has a summer curriculum development program lead by the teachers. As part of a community partnership program, BPACE engages in monthly community meetings. The staff of the outreach program includes bilingual (Spanish/English, Chinese/English) community liaisons.
