Adult Basic Education Program

The Baldwin Park Adult and Community Education (BPACE) Adult Basic Education Program prioritizes effective communication between students and teachers. Individual student-teacher conferences occur at least once a month, but typically happen more often so that students’ goals can be revised. Within the school there is a close collaboration with other program areas and ABE students may easily transfer to programs that better fit their needs. The school is responsive to students’ changing situations, and students are allowed to return for refreshers on topics. The program uses technology to extend lessons beyond the classroom. For example, teachers use the Web to post homework, supplemental lessons, and self-tests that students complete at home. According to student testimonies, working with this technology at home allows students, as adult learners, to serve as role models for other family members. The BPACE ABE program also supports students’ connections to their local community. The program collaborates with the local library, a local adult group home, Warner Brother’s Time to Read program, and an Even Start program. A community liaison represents and advertises the adult school programs at the local farmer’s market and other local events.
