Statement from the Principal
“Our English as a Second Language Program received a Programs of Excellence award in 2003, and we acknowledged the process as a means to develop an excellent program according to very specific, measurable criteria. We continued to use the Programs of Excellence document as a tool to analyze and continuously improve our ESL program until we felt ready to apply again.
“The beauty of Programs of Excellence is that it is a fully engaging process that includes all staff members in the entire school. It gives a framework for analyzing every aspect of the program and determining strengths and areas for improvement. It was especially rewarding to see our staff dive into the criteria and work together with total involvement in the process, not just to win an award, but to truly be the best ESL program possible!
“Our stakeholder meeting with the visiting team was especially rewarding, as we listened to community members, board members, staff in other programs, students, district administrators, and city and county officials speak with great passion about the importance of our programs to the community. Our staff came away with a clear sense of pride in themselves and each other.
“This rigorous and rewarding process is worth it on many levels. It has given us positive visibility, helped in our marketing efforts, validated the great things we do for students, helped us improve in weaker areas, and made us a stronger, more cohesive team.”
